In our local life posts we ask locals from all kinds of cities about their city favourites. Today we asked Monica from the Wax Express about her favourite spots in Amsterdam and her other hometown: Marbella. Monica is a busy lady with plenty of projects that she organises such as the modelling competition Top Model of Colour and being the editor in chief of online magazine by Styling Amsterdam. She is also the proud owner of mobile waxing company the Wax Express.
ABOUT THE WAX EXPRESS
FH: When and why did you decide to start a company in waxing?
M: “As an avid fashion and beauty aficionado, I’ve always been interested in innovations within the realm of lifestyle. I’ve always wondered why a private waxing service wasn’t available. Today’s working woman leads a hectic lifestyle, especially when kids are involved. If so, you don’t always have time to go to a salon for essential treatments. That’s why I concepted a professional mobile waxing service executed in the comfort of your home!”
FH: What is the purpose of the Wax Express?
M: “The Wax Express delivers full waxing services in the comfort of your home. I drop by, equipped with all required utensils and materials, to provide my services. This Summer, I’ve completed a professional course at a beauty institute in Barranquilla, Colombia. Mind you, Colombia is a country obsessed with beauty, and as such, the industry is quite advanced when it comes to insights, treatments and trends.”
FH: Which person would you love to have on your waxing table?
M: “I’d love to have Jennifer Lopez at my table, she’s an icon!”
FH: What is it like, living in Amsterdam?
M: “I love the city’s easy-going vibe, and yet, it’s very cosmopolitan and well-connected. I mean, it’s not as big as London or Paris, but it’s still a crossroads of culture, constantly pulling people from across the globe. I feel very much at home in such an environment.”
FH: What makes Marbella so unique?
M: “For me, Marbella is the perfect getaway destination, both in Summer and Winter. But I also like to head to the Spanish coastal town of Tarifa in Summer. It’s a boho-chic surfer’s paradise with sun-kissed beaches, and it’s only an hour’s drive away from Marbella. In winter, the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains offer fabulous ski facilities, allowing you to hit the slopes in the morning and have lunch on the beach in the afternoon. Amazing!”
FH: What is your favourite lunch spot in Marbella?
M: “The perfect healthy lunch can be found at Organic Market Marbella. Whether it’s a snack, dessert or a smoothie, the offerings are incredible. It event caters to vegans and ti those who have allergies and specific food intolerances.”
FH: What is your favourite restaurant to have dinner in Marbella?
M: “Having lived in Marbella for 18 years, I can only conclude that it’s gourmet heaven! It’s an affluent and sophisticated resort, and as such, it offers plenty of fine dining, including a handful of Michelin-starred restaurants. My faves are Finca Besaya, Dani Garcia, Asador Vovem and Amore e Fantasia in nearby Puerto Banús, and I’d also like to mention my number one tapas destination, La Niña del Pisto.”
