Everyone in Amsterdam knows where to go for a wonderful high tea: the Amstel Hotel. This hotel with still some beautiful 19th century features intact, is situated along the Amstel river. If you want to see some of Amsterdam’s history, this is where you should go. We arrived in the impressive entrance and the concierge was so kind to let us know that they were preparing our high tea and that we will be taken to our seats in the lounge within a few minutes. A nice opportunity to take a quick snap of the entrance.
HIGH TEA AMSTEL HOTEL
Okay, so we never had a high tea like this one before. The Amstel hotel reinvented the definition of high tea if you ask us. Did you ever experience a four course high tea? Neither did we. But now we did. Amstel Hotel created a beautiful four course high tea menu with three savoury and one sweet course. All courses have their own tea, carefully selected by the management who creates the high tea menu each year. You will see a great peek of what we ate and drank in the pictures below.
First we started with a Darjeeling tea with almond and peach flavours from India. With this tea, salmon, caviar and vegetables with creme fraiche were served. The salmon was so tender! As a second course we had a green Sencha tea from Japan in a wine glass. Did you know you can set the flavours of a tea free by putting it in a wine glass, just like you do with wine? That was a completely new fact to us. With this tea we had four sandwiches presented in a big bread, very creative! The third course was for snacking: we got served a small hamburger with a shrimp croquette together with a Chinese Lung Ching green tea. The final course were all the sweets you would expect during a high tea. And they were all homemade. With this course a Jardin Blue ice tea was served, our favourite! Everything was well-prepared and carefully selected: an experience we would definitely like to enjoy again.
